We’ve recently had a call out for workshop delivery, and will have more opportunities coming up, so I wanted to give a little guidance about how to price yourself for ‘funded’ projects. You may have delivered workshops before but charge per person, so this could be a different approach to what you have done in the past.

Firstly, consider your level of experience – are you new to delivering creative workshops? Or do you have many years of experience? There are guides for ‘artist day rate’ from organisations such as Artist Union and A-N, which you may find useful.

Another option is you can also price according to the time you’ll be committing to an activity, and don’t forget workshop preparation time! Here is a very basic example but we would recommend this as a very minimum:

£11.44 per hour (National Living Wage – absolute minimum you should ever base pricing on, but we’d expect the actual figure to be higher) x 2 hours preparation + 2 hours workshop + 1 hour post workshop for clean up, putting away your resources at home etc. = £57.20

+ 30% for holiday, tax, sick pay, student loan repayments, pension etc. because this is a self employed opportunity = £74.36

+ a rough estimate of your overheads – insurance, training, IT resources, your bills associated with your business etc. You might want to work this out roughly across the year and divide by however many workshops you think you are delivering (e.g. insurance and other costs are £500 per year, divided by 20 workshops is £25) = £99.36

+ think about whether you’ll be taking any of your own equipment to the session, how much this cost you to buy and maintain. This might include basic things like scissors, but also sewing machines, tools for clay, cutting matts etc. (let’s say £500 worth of tools, divided by 20 workshops is £25) = £124.36

+ materials and consumables

+ travel costs including any parking fees

You can hopefully quickly see that there are many additional costs associated with delivering workshops and projects.
